Background

Since 80th of last century, more and more quantitative methods have been introduced into stratigraphy, paleobiology, paleogeography, paleoecology and paleoclimatology. With the rapid development and spread of computer techniques, these methods and related quantitative researches, such as paleobiodiversity, quantitative stratigraphy, morphometrics, cladistics and paleo-reconstruction, became more common.

Furthermore, during the last ten years, with the establish of large-scale online database of paleobiology and stratigraphy, such as PBDB (Paleobiology Database, www.pbdb.org) and PaleoStrat (www.paleostrat.org), databases and the data analysis tools based on them became more popolar. In order to provide an opportunity for Chinese students and scientist to learn these methods and how to use them in their research work, we organize "Internation Symposium on Quantitative Stratigraphy and Paleobiology and GBDB summer Course" (ISQSP) every two years since 2010. Topics could include any mature quantitative methods in stratigraphy, paleobiology, paleogeography, paleoecology, paleoclimatology and related disciplines, such as quantitative stratigraphy, diversity curves, speciation and extinction, morphometrics, community paleoecology, paleobiogeographic modelling, and paleo-reconstruction.
